Polish-Ukrainian Summer School

From August 1 to August 8, 2018, the Second International Polish-Ukrainian Summer School organized by the Pedagogical University in Krakow took place in Olkusz. For over a week, young students from Poland and Ukraine took part in lectures and joint workshops and visited the area around our city. The co-organizer of this event was the SIMO Association.

The Polish-Ukrainian Summer School is a project organized by the Pedagogical University of Krakow together with partner universities from across the eastern border. This is a strictly scientific initiative aimed at the cooperation of students from both countries. The first edition of the school, which took place last year, was held in Nieżyn in Ukraine. This year, the Ukrainian students came to Poland, and their base became Olkusz.

The project took part 30 participants from the Pedagogical University in Krakow and from the universities of Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv and Nieżyn. Their place of accommodation was a Youth Hostel "Jura". The theme of the school was decentralization in Poland and Ukraine as well as social involvement of young people at the local level. The convention program included weekly lectures and workshops conducted by researchers from the Polish and Ukraine, joint trips and games.

- Summer School is not only lectures, group work and joint projects. It is also a tour, getting to know another culture and gaining valuable experience. The students had the opportunity to become acquainted with the local government, learn about the history of our city and visit the nearby monuments - explains Mateusz Kamionka, PhD student at the Pedagogical University in Krakow and vice-president of the SIMO association, which is the co-organizer of the event.

As part of the course, students debated on ecology, volunteering and the role of local media in the life of local communities. Thanks to the visit in the Town Office and in the District Office in Olkusz, they could become acquainted with the activities of self-government in Poland. Participants of the Summer School also had the opportunity to take part in the city game "Historic Footsteps of Olkusz".

Honorary patronage over the whole event included, among others: Embassy of Ukraine in Warsaw, Rector of the Pedagogical University in Krakow, Rectors of Partner Universities in Ukraine, Marshal of the Małopolska Voivodeship, Mayor of the City of Olkusz and Landrat of the Olkusz District.
